When Should I Get a 3D/4D Ultrasound? The Best Weeks to See Your Baby
One of the most common questions we hear at A Sound Image Ultrasound Studio in Johnson City, TN is, “When is the best time to get a 3D/4D ultrasound?”
The answer depends on what you're hoping to see! Your baby changes so much throughout pregnancy, and every stage offers something a little different. Whether you're hoping for an early peek at tiny features, sweet movements, or those adorable chubby cheeks, here's what you can expect at different stages of pregnancy.
14–20 Weeks: See More of Your Growing Baby
During the second trimester, baby is still small enough that we can often see more of their entire body on the screen at once.
At this stage, you may get to watch baby stretch, kick, turn, and move around. Facial features are beginning to become more defined, although baby won't have the fuller, chubbier appearance you'll see later in pregnancy.
This can be a fun time for families who simply can't wait to see how much their little one has grown!
20–26 Weeks: Features Are Becoming More Defined
As you move further into the second trimester, baby's facial features continue to develop and become easier to recognize.
You may begin seeing more detail in the nose, lips, chin, hands, and feet. There's still usually plenty of room for movement, which can make this stage especially fun to watch in 4D.
If you're excited to see your baby's personality starting to shine through, you may even catch a yawn, stretch, or little hand moving across their face.
26–32 Weeks: The Sweet Spot for 3D/4D Ultrasound
If your main goal is to get those beautiful images of your baby's face, 26–32 weeks is often our favorite window for a 3D/4D ultrasound.
By this point, baby has typically developed more fat beneath the skin, giving the face that fuller, sweeter appearance families love. The cheeks are filling out, facial features are more defined, and there is often still enough room and fluid around baby to capture great images.
This is when we frequently get those precious images where you can start debating whose nose, lips, or cheeks baby has!
33 Weeks and Beyond: Chubby Cheeks & a Sneak Peek Before Delivery
You can absolutely still have a 3D/4D ultrasound later in pregnancy!
In fact, some of our favorite images come from babies in the final weeks before delivery. Babies are usually much chubbier at this point, so when they're in a good position, the facial detail can be incredible.
The biggest difference is that baby has less room to move. Hands, feet, the placenta, or baby's position can sometimes make it more challenging to get a clear view of the face.
But when baby cooperates? Those late-pregnancy cheeks are hard to beat!
What Affects 3D/4D Ultrasound Images?
Gestational age isn't the only factor that determines what we'll be able to see.
Baby's position plays a huge role. Some babies are ready for their close-up, while others would much rather snuggle into the placenta, cover their face with both hands, or turn completely away from us!
The amount of amniotic fluid around baby's face and the location of the placenta can also affect imaging.
That's part of the fun of ultrasound—every baby and every session is different.
So, What's the BEST Week?
If you're hoping for the classic chubby-cheek 3D/4D images, we generally recommend scheduling your session around 26–32 weeks.
But there really isn't one "perfect" week for everyone.
Earlier sessions can be amazing for seeing baby's entire body and movements, while later sessions can give you an incredible glimpse of what your baby may look like when you finally meet.
And many of our families choose to visit us more than once because there's nothing quite like watching your baby grow throughout pregnancy.
